2010's spring festival explored the beautiful Brandon area - a treasure trove of spectacular scenery and a hikers' dream. We followed famous pioneer trails through forest and meadow, and trekked steep ridges up and down plunging river valleys. These are some of the most interesting hikes in Canada and Prairie Pathfinder favourites! Three full days of hiking began Friday mid-morning and ended Sunday afternoon. Hikes included the Brandon Hills - where one dramatic panoramic view follows another and the serenely beautiful Assiniboine River Valley on the Silverbend Trail. All three days explored some of the best secret treasures that Manitoba has to offer. |

Our first 5 Day Manitoba hiking tour was definitely a whirlwind action-packed affair that took us from Steep Rock to the towering Grass River waterfalls to the sand dunes of Spruce Woods with many a scenic treasure in between. Five days of five star hiking from Thompson and Pisew Falls in the north then west to Flin Flon and Virden with a full slate of prize hikes well off the beaten path. |

Visit a graceful and romantic past with a heritage walk along the quiet tree-lined streets of Brandon, a city that puts an exceptionally rich collection of heritage buildings on display. Tour that most extraordinary and mysterious Manitoba landmark - ‘the Brandon Mental’. Back in the 1800s, this picturesque collection of stately architecture housed an insane asylum. A lunch of fine fresh locally produced food will be served in the architectural splendour of the Grey Owl dining room - the crown jewel of the historic 'Brandon Mental' now home to the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts. |

On our second Literary Tour we followed the footsteps of Nellie McClung, Margaret Laurence, and Ernest Thompson Seton, three of Manitoba’s best-loved and most famous literary figures. Seeing where they lived and worked opened up a new perspective and fresh understanding of their work. Short hikes were interspersed with visits to the romantic ghost town of Milford, the beautiful Carberry Sandhills and the iconic stone angel in Neepawa’s Riverside Cemetery. This hiking tour was as much about food as it was about literature or hiking. On the bus out to Neepawa, we were served fresh coffee and a delicious rhubarb platz. Our mid day lunch was a feast of roasted vegetables, DeLuca dinner rolls, Wpg Old Country baked ham and slices of BBQ marinated flank steak. But our afternoon pioneer picnic circa 1880s was a sumptious affair that had to be the highlight of the day. |
